The incident took place around 9 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the school at 1 Wagner Ave., when the man, now ID'd as Lennox London, 36, of Roosevelt, had words with the landscapers and then fired the shots into the ground, police said.
The high school and Roosevelt Middle School were immediately put on lockdown.
The man then went to his home which is beside the school where he reportedly barricaded himself until the police Special Operations Unit arrived and he surrendered without incident.
Execution of a search warrant on London's home resulted in the recovery of a semi-automatic handgun.
London was charged with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He will be arraigned on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at First District Court on Main Street in Hempstead.
School is not in session, but teachers and support staff were inside the building along with about 100 football, soccer and track athletes, officials said.
No one was injured during the incident.
